What is Alyssa’s Law?

When it comes to emergency response to life-threatening situations within schools, every second counts.

Alyssa's Law is legislation working to create safer learning environments prepared to handle emergencies rapidly and effectively by mandating that all public elementary and secondary school buildings implement silent panic alarms directly connected to local law enforcement. The alarms must be discreet, easily accessible to school personnel and capable of providing detailed information to law enforcement about the location of the emergency.

The bill is a namesake for Alyssa Alhadeff, who tragically died in the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Alyssa was one of seventeen children lost in the Parkland, Florida, shooting.

Devastated by the loss of their fourteen-year-old daughter and hoping to continue to do more to prevent any other families from experiencing a similar tragedy, Lori and Ilan Alhadeff created "Make Our Schools Safe." The non-profit works tirelessly to expand on Alyssa's Law, developing safety programs tailored to the needs of participating schools.
